In chapter 21 and 22 Amir goes through a rollercoaster of emotions and events. I think Amir was challenged when he first returned to Kabul and struggled to grasp the situation everyone was in. With this we see Amir fight Assef. I think we can look at this interaction and conflict in many different ways, but I kind of understand Amir’s reason to fight. This is because Amir has so many left behind and unclosed emotions with his relationships that he has lost in his life, and fighting with this emotion is maybe therapeutic for Amir at this time.
My prediction about Hassan meeting someone from his childhood was right, but I would never have expected it to be Assef and him with the role of a Taliban leader. I really liked these two chapters because I think that it is a very good “comeback story” in a way. Assef; Amir's childhood bully and the kid that raped Hassan has all this power now, he realizes that he is speaking to Amir and he is still upset about when Hassan and Amir humbled him in front of his friends by threatening to shoot out his eye all those years ago, he got his revenge on Hassan by killing him and now he wanted to get it on Amir. He comes up with this idea that he and Amir will fight to the death for Sohrab (Hassan's son) and Amir is losing hard, and then Sohrab threatens to shoot Assef in the eye with his slingshot that Hassan taught him to use. Sohrab mirror his father and eventually follows through with what Hassan never got to do… which is shooting out Assefs eye. That is why I think that these chapters were a comeback/revenge story, because Hassan's story sort of come full circle with his son carrying out what he never got to finish.
In these chapters we see Amir experiencing a variety of feelings and he gets to see what Kabul has become first hand. Amir goes back to Baba’s house and gets to experience all of his childhood actions again. For example going back up to the tree where Amir would read to Hassan. Assef is now a head member of the Taliban and we find out he is the one who killed Hassan. Assef has Sohrab and wants to fight Amir for him. Amir thinks this is the only way of getting Sohrab. We see Amir is now standing up for himself and not letting anyone do his fighting for him. This is different from his childhood. During the fight, Assef has the upper hand and Amir is not doing well until Sohrab steps in and does what Hassan wishes he had been able to do. That is to shoot Assef in the eye with a slingshot and this help Amir immensely. -Saer Sicignano
In these chapters, Amir figures out the Taliban had something to do with the moving of the orphanage. Him and Farid decide to try going to meet with a Taliban member. They hear about an execution in Kabul. They decide to go and find out about the gruesome event occurring to the crimalized people the Taliban arrested. The crime they were charged with was adultery. The taliban member Amir and Farid meet with Assef. Assef views America as the wrongdoing of the world. Amir speaks on how assef is a traitor. To earn the boy back both men must fight. They are both in the middle of the fight when sorhab hits Assef in the eye. In which then they get in the car and get away.
Ok here we go again in chapter 21 of the Kite Runner Farid drives Amir to Baba’s house it seems to be falling apart Farid and Amir go in everything seems to be destroyed but still recognizable.Amir finds his bedroom window and remembers looking at Hassan and Ail leave out of it they later leave and go to an orphanage suspecting that Baba’s kid is inside it.In chapter 22 they arrive at the orphanage Amir goes inside where he meets an Taliban official to leads him into a room Amir starts to regret not acting like a coward anymore he finds out that the kid is in the orphanages then offer the officials money in which they decline.

In chapter 21, Amir returns to his old neighborhood in Kabul, and starts to get flashbacks from when he was a kid growing up in the town. In the beginning Amir notices a body hanging from a beam on a building. The way the author describes the body made it very imaginative.
In chapter 22, begins with Farid dropping Amir off to see the Taliban Official. He is met with two guards that had executed the 2 people at the stadium in the previous chapter. Amir meets the official and it turns out that he is Assef, the guy who raped Hassan. Amir ends up fighting Assef and wins due to Hassan’s son saving him in the end.
I believe these 2 chapters were the most encapsulating and interesting chapters out of what I have read so far. Chapter 22, especially, surprised me. The chapter took a turn when we found out the Taliban Official was Aseef and he was the one who had Hassan’s son. I did not expect that at all. -Yanna
In all these chapters, Amir discovers that the Taliban were involved in the orphanage's relocation. He and Farid make the decision to try to meet with a Taliban member. Assef is now a Taliban leader, and we learn that he was the one who killed Hassan. Assef possesses Sohrab and is willing to fight Amir on his behalf. This, Amir believes, is the only way to get Sohrab.
In chapter 21, Amir struggles with his feelings over his old city. It brings back memories of his childhood. After the soccer game, Amir goes to find the Taliban official because he wants to get Sohrab. Amir finds out that the official is actually Assef. I did not expect Sohrab to be held by his father’s murderer. It’s like Assef continues to “rape” Hassan even after he is dead. I had no idea how Amir was going to survive his fight between Assef. Amir ends up getting saved by Sohrab when Sohrab shoots Assef in the head with a slingshot. This brings the story full circle because earlier in the book when Amir and Hassan were just kids, Hassan threatens Assef with his slingshot.
